Information Technology Research Activity Updates
November 2008 – March 2009

Overview

This second semester, the research coordinator handle the subject IT for Rural Development (component of the BSIT old curriculum). The course aims to stir the interest of BSIT senior students on community development and social responsibility and use IT as a tool. Hence, the premier outreach program of the department was established; subsequently it was formally named as “Computer Training Program” which carries a tagline “Training for a Cause at No Cost”. The objective of the program is to assess, recognize and fill the need/s of the selected students of various Public High Schools (PHSs) across Northern Negros by extending assistance or training on basic and intermediate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills for free. The training includes five technical areas on: 1.) PC Operation 2.) Computer Application 3.) Web Development 4.) Multimedia Tools/ Presentation 5.) Communication Tools/ Internet Activities.

The research coordinator facilitates the training and manages 17 teams. These 17 teams are dispersed throughout the 12 Public High Schools in Northern Negros. Each team consists of 5-6 members who were designated as trainers. The 98 trainers trained a minimum of 13 and a maximum of over 100 selected students of various sections among 12 PHSs. Each team is tasked to create or design a training module based on the completed training needs assessment conducted during the survey. At the end of each training session, each team manages or makes a habit to document and show off the details of the training via web blogs. Each team exists with its own blogger and or documenter.
